Heritage Grass Fed Dexter Beef, Pork (Heritage and Non-Heritage), and Pastured Poultry :: Naturally Raised - Hormone and Antibiotic Free About Us Stoneyfield Farm is located among the winding roads and rolling hills of Central Marion County, just outside of Knoxville, Iowa. We are a pasture based farm raising purebred Dexter cattle, pastured pork, and free range poultry. Our desire is to create a farm that thrives in the intricacies of God's beautiful creation and that is a sustainable part of our local community. Browse through our Products for Sale Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) Our animals are naturally and humanely raised on our 40 acre farm, with 23 acres of pasture and 17 wooded acres. Before we purchased our farm, our land was in the CRP program for at least 14 years with a pasture planting of prairie grasses. No chemicals were applied during this time, and we continue to not apply chemicals to our land. We use rotational grazing on our pastures to continue to improve our land and to help control parasites. We are also converting our woods for livestock as well. Our animals are not given or fed antibiotics or hormones, and no animal by-products are used in our custom rations. * Our pigs are raised outside in the sunshine with access to huts for shelter and farrowing. They have plenty of room to run and exercise, and they are allowed to graze, root, and wallow. * Our Dexter cattle are rotated on pasture and are 100% grass fed. Our Dexters have access to shelter in the winter, and the deep bedding created is composted and spread on our farm. Additional Information The shift to large scale meat production has developed animals that grow the fastest in those conditions. Not only have these methods lost some of the great taste in meats, but they have in part led to the decline of heritage breeds. In order to keep "real" meat available and have animals that are hardy enough to survive naturally without antibiotics or hormones, it is important to keep the genetic pool of these great tasting heritage breeds around. You can read more about our heritage breeds on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy website. *Dexter Cattle - An Irish breed - recovering *Hereford Hogs - Originated in Iowa and Nebraska - watch list Locker Information: * Our meat is processed at a local USDA inspected locker. * Our locker takes extra care to see that packages contain meat from only one animal, especially in the case of ground and bacon. * Because the local locker we use is a smaller locker, they do not have the more expensive equipment that shingles bacon. Unless noted otherwise, our bacon is packaged the "old fashioned" way: sliced to thickness, having random lengths, and packaged in a cluster. * We have our meat packaged in freezer paper to prolong freshness and help prevent freezer burn. * We don't use Nitrate Free Curing. We have spoken to many lockers in our area about nitrate free curing. The one locker we found that has used it no longer carries the curing mix. Instead of the regular cure, they were using a cure that substituted celery powder. They found that celery powder itself contains sodium nitrates and that by using celery powder they were most likely adding more nitrates than if they used their traditional curing method. In addition to this, they mentioned that a celery powder cure mix does not have as long of a shelf life. Highlights This Month This month we are continuing to offer 100% Heritage Hereford Pork, a breed which originated in Iowa and Nebraska, as well as some individual cuts of a Bershire/Hereford cross. Be sure to take a peek back near the end of the ordering cycle. We hope to get some more pork back from the locker before the cycle closes.
